< Back Risks and Rewards: Outcomes of Labour Migration in South-East Asia by ILO, IOM and Rapid Asia SweCham member, Rapid Asia, who specialises in social research and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) consulting conducted an interesting research and published report. In 2017, Rapid Asia conducted a study on behalf of ILO and IOM to obtain a better understanding of the factors that shape migration outcomes in Southeast Asia. The study interviewed over 1800 returnee migrant workers from Cambodia, Viet Nam, Lao PDR and Myanmar who had been employed in Thailand or Malaysia. The findings are published in the report Risks and rewards: Outcomes of labour migration in South-East Asia released for International Migrants Day on 18 December 2017. A Migration Outcomes Index (MOI) was developed for this study to measure changes in the lives of migrant workers from before to after their migration. The Index broadens the way migration outcomes are measured by incorporating both social and economic elements. It represents a break not only from the narrow focus on counting remittances but also from the human trafficking paradigm that has been very dominant in SE Asia. Previous Next

< Back Recruitment Fees and Related Costs Report by Rapid Asia SweCham member, Rapid Asia, who specialises in social research and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) consulting conducted an interesting research and published report earlier this year. The “Recruitment fees and related costs” report was a major research study carried out by Rapid Asia, on behalf of ILO, in Thailand. The study looks at what migrant workers from Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar pay to work in Thailand. Recruitment costs can be rather high and the importance to reduce this cost is recognized in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development under indicator 10.7.1 . < Back AstraZeneca reveals 60% of people with high risk in Thailand are still affected by COVID-19 19 Jul 2023 AstraZeneca released the result of a recent survey indicating that 60% of the sample group, including those with immunodeficiency and those at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19, said that their daily lives are still affected by the pandemic. AstraZeneca announced their commitment to help these groups return to their normal lives through their previously launched campaign. The existing COVID vaccines and preventing measures might not be enough to protect those at risk from contracting COVID-19. Additionally, 92% of the sample group revealed in the survey that they would like to gain more knowledge about other alternatives to prevent them from contracting the virus. This reiterates the importance of creating awareness regarding COVID-19 and preventative measures as it will increase knowledge for the people at risk and encourage them to seek doctors’ advice. AstraZeneca saw the importance in building a better understanding for those at risk, so that they can better protect themselves from COVID-19, aligning with their existing awareness campaign. Prioritising higher-risk individuals and those with immunodeficiency is essential to reduce severe illness and fatalities, so that they will be able to resume their normal life. < Back Swedish community welcomes Olof and Marie back to Bangkok 1 Jun 2023 After living abroad for many years, including six years in Brazil and five years in Florida to name some destinations, Olof and Marie have now landed in Bangkok. For over a decade, they have been serving the Swedish Church community all over the world. Olof and Marie are not only here for Thailand, but for the whole southeast Asia including Japan. They have returned here for many reasons and have many tasks to fulfil, including finding the Swedes and rebuilding the Swedish Church community after the pandemic. The geographical situation may also vary, and some places may be filled with interested individuals while some other places may not be.
