WHO announces simple, easy-to-say labels for SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Interest and Concern

Covid-19 vaccines and virus

WHO has assigned simple, easy to say and remember labels for key variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, using letters of the Greek alphabet to assist with public discussions of variants. These labels were chosen following extensive consultation and consideration of a range of alternative naming systems. To do so, WHO convened experts from all across the world, including members of existing naming systems, nomenclature and virus taxonomy experts, researchers, and national authorities. They have recommended using letters of the Greek alphabets, i.e., Alpha, Beta, Gamma, which will be easier and more practical to use in discussions by non-scientific audiences as per outlined in the tables below.
