In mid July the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce (TSCC) announced to all members that our Executive Director, Mr Peter Bjork, has resigned with immediate effect, having been offered instead a new position as Executive Director of the European Association for Business and Commerce (EABC), which he had applied for. Peter Björk served TSCC for over four years.

“After four great years with Swecham it is now time for me to move on to new challenges. We have a very competent and experienced President, Board and staff so the transition will be smooth. It will also be good for the Chamber with a new Executive Director (ED) that can carry on the renewal work. I urge everyone to fully support the Interim organisation and later the new ED,” Peter Björk told the news website ScandAsia.

“This is a great promotion for Peter as well as a great challenge,” President Jan Eriksson of TSCC wrote to the Chamber members.

“Peter has done an outstanding job for TSCC putting in a very large amount of hours above his employment contract. He has handled his job with the highest integrity always promoting TSCC and Thai – Swedish business relations and being an exceptionally good representative for all that TSCC stands for”.

Following the director’s resignation Project Manager Jiraya Chanchon took over as acting Executive Director, until a new Executive Director has been officially appointed.

Proud Premium Member of the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce, Black Mountain Golf Club, is about to host its by far biggest event up to now, following on what has already been a very successful adventure for the Swedish-owned golf course as well as resort, waterpark, wakeboard park and residential village.

The Thailand Classic is here, taking place from February 12-15, 2015. This will be first tournament co-sanctioned between the European Tour and Asian Tour to be permanently based in Thailand and by far the largest event ever to take place in the royal seaside resort Hua Hin, broadcasted on television worldwide.

The much-anticipated return of a European Tour event in Thailand after eight years excites the golf fans and the tournament forms part of the European Tour’s International Schedule, with accumulation of points in the prestigious Race to Dubai series, a yearlong competition currently led by World Number One Rory McIlroy. The US$2 million prize money is a record for a tournament in Thailand and regarded as an exciting new chapter in the kingdom’s golfing history.

Co-sanctioned by the European Tour for at least three years the tournament attracts top players from the European Tour including from the successful Ryder Cup squad.

Meanwhile, Thongchai Jaidee, in recognition of his contribution to Thai golf, is gearing up for his duties as the nation’s Thailand Classic ambassador with the aim of seeing local Thai golfers secure a chance to win this prestigious European Tour event in their homeland. Thongchai is recognized as one of the best players ever to come out of Asia.

“It is a great honour to be named the Tournament Ambassador,” said the Thai star. “ I am very proud that Thailand will be hosting the Classic which will attract some of the best golfers in the world. I am also glad to see that this European Tour co-sanctioned event is taking place in Thailand once again. This event can surely help develop local golfers’ performances in the international arena. Besides, Thailand’s tourism will be promoted through this golf tournament as well. I will do my best as a proud player of the host country.”

In addition to his 13 Asian Tour titles, Thongchai, 45, has won six European Tour events and has been in excellent form recently.

12 spots in the Thailand Classic are made available for local golfers from the Professional Golf Association of Thailand (PGAT.)

The golfers will be vying for a unique prize, the “Pride of Thailand’’ trophy, which has been specially designed for the Classic. The beautiful trophy is a combination of Thai craft and contemporary design and is a work of art in itself.

Some of the names of the world’s leading golfers who will take part in the tournament were also announced. Among the Ryder Cup stars already confirmed are the charismatic Englishman, Ian Poulter, and the exciting young Frenchman, Victor Dubuisson.

In addition to his Ryder Cup success in which he has proved to be a key player in Europe’s victories, Poulter has won an impressive 12 European Tour titles plus two events on the Asian Tour.

Another familiar face who will be attending the Classic is Thomas Bjorn. The 43-year-old is Denmark’s most successful player ever, having won 15 tournaments on the European Tour.

The Black Mountain Golf course is in beautiful condition and has earned widespread acclaim amongst golfers since it opened in 2007, winning a number of international awards.

Our TSCC (Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce) Corporate Member Diakrit (a 2D and 3D software developer with marketing of real estate) has joined forces with the Swedish Women’s Educational Association (SWEA) and The Milk Project to initiate fundraising for the non-profit organization Kids Ark Foundation (KAF) in Thailand.

These organisations came together in hopes of helping the KAF to develop their facilities and programs further, thus providing even better care for the children. Diakrit placed donation boxes in each of its offices, boxes that the company and its employees used to collect a total of THB 88,000.

“Diakrit has been helping the KAF for the last ten years and it is immensely satisfying to see how the hard work of the people that run KAF is helping so many children.” says Fredrik Bergman, DIAKRIT’s President & CEO.

“DIAKRIT firmly believes in giving back to the less fortunate. We are therefore more than happy to lend a helping hand to the KAF children in hopes that in doing so we are helping to pave the way for these children to have a brighter future.”

The Milk Project raised THB 20,000 thanks to the generous donations of numerous miscellaneous donors. KAF plans on using these funds to buy a large dining table for the children to be able to sit and have dinner together. SWEA chose to donate a wide range of practical Christmas presents valued at THB 30,000. Representatives from SWEA and The Milk Project went to IKEA and purchased the Christmas presents, gifts that which included pens, notebooks, and easels. They also purchased kitchen equipment, Swedish Christmas treats, and a whole lot of toys.

“We called the KAF and asked them to send us a wish list for Christmas, which they gladly did.” says Maria Mellblom, Chairman of SWEA, Bangkok. “Together with The Milk Project we went and bought everything KAF wished for, from IKEA. This Christmas the KAF children will be visited by the SWEA Santa who will deliver their presents to them. It feels incredibly fun and delightful that we have had the opportunity to spread the Christmas cheer with these children.”

SWEA is a global non-profit organization and a network for Swedes and Swedish-speaking women who are, or have been, residents abroad.

Three Bangkok-based Swedish women founded the Milk Project in 2014, to give back to the slums of Bangkok. Milk Project helps less fortunate women who live in the impoverished areas of the city, mothers especially, by donating Swedish baby formula and by helping to fund their life-essential expenses. Milk Project emphasizes that every penny sent to them goes directly to these less fortunate women.
The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce can announce that our Premium Member Volvo Group Thailand has cemented its presence in Thailand by opening its new headquarters for Southeast Asia in Bangna outside Bangkok. This also completes the five billion baht investment from the group into Thailand, which we have previously presented in our magazine Thai Sweden Review.

“Volvo’s investment supports customers in logistic business to be competitive in the region and it is as well our commitment to Thailand where there is a growing market. Thailand and ASEAN countries are very important markets for Volvo Group especially when AEC opens next year,” said Mr Joachim Rosenberg, Executive Vice President Volvo Group Trucks Sales & Marketing APAC.

Two billion baht of the investment was for increasing our assembly capacity at the existing Thai-Swedish Assembly Company. Another three billion baht was for the expansion of the dealership network from 6 to 15 nationwide. The company’s one stop service for Volvo Trucks, Volvo Buses and UD Trucks will now provide the highest standard of quality.

“Today, our grand opening ceremony of new Headquarters and Bangna dealership is to confirm our completion of investment here. A part of our investment is our new headquarters cost around one billion Thai baht,” said Mr Jacques Michel, President of Volvo Group Thailand.

He said the new Headquarters is considered as a flagship dealer as it is currently the largest facility in the extensive network of 15 dealerships. It is also a regional office of 6 countries in South East Asia which includes Thailand, Myanmar, Lao, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The new headquarters and Bangna dealer on Bangna Trat Highway KM. 21. also provides Preventive maintenance, General Repairs and Body Repairs and other additional service such as brake testing and emission checks to strengthen its commitment in core values.

The new Headquarters and Bangna dealer is also including the regional training center for Asia. It provides comprehensive training including more than 200 courses that are the global standards from Volvo Group University. It covers practical and theoretical training, which includes e-learning and self-study though multi-media channels. The center expects to have 5,000 people attending training each year.

Last but not least the new facilities are designed to take good care of the environment, in accordance with Volvo Group’s core values of quality, safety and environmental care.

“We have invested 18 million Thai baht in a state of the art spray painting facility which uses only water based paints in order to protect the environment,” Mr. Jacques Michel highlighted.
The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce is pleased to congratulate its Corporate member, the by Swedes developed and managed Black Mountain Golf Resort Hua Hin for its most prestigious reward so far. The golf course won no less than three major awards at the Asia Pacific Golf Summit in Singapore in November, including Best Golf Course in Asia.
Black Mountain was also awarded ‘Best Championship Course in Asia’ and its Swedish general manager, Harald Elisson, was named ‘Best General Manager in Asia.’
This was also unprecedented; with one single golf course winning so many awards. The reinforced elite status for Black Mountain thus also spreads throughout the world, as golf industry professionals from Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America attend the annual awards event.
Black Mountain has also been awarded by the same summit back in 2012 when it was named best championship course in Asia Pacific as well as best course in Thailand, the latter for the second time.

Also in 2012, Black Mountain became the first course in Thailand included in the prestigious US Golf Digest list of the Top 100 courses outside the United States.
Harald Elisson said the awards represented further acknowledgement of Black Mountain’s widespread appeal to members and guests who come to the course from all around the world.
“We have worked hard to constantly improve the course, facilities and service standards,” he commented. “We strive to present the course in excellent condition year-round and have also made a big effort to make Black Mountain a true golf resort for families. As well as the championship course and a great par-3 course, Black Mountain has a water park and wakeboard park, tennis and volleyball courts, spa and an excellent restaurant. It is truly a family-friendly destination with something for everybody.”
The latest Asia Pacific Golf Summit awards are also further recognition for Hua Hin as one of Asia’s leading golf tourism destinations. In 2012, Hua Hin was named by the International Association of Golf Tourism Operators (IAGTO) as golf destination of the year for Asia and Australasia.
The attention for the Hua Hin golf course will be boosted even further in February 2015 when Black Mountain will become the home to the Thailand Classic, a jointly sanctioned European Tour and Asian Tour tournament, for the next three years from 2015.

The Thai Elephants’ Devoted, Swedish Friends

There are different ways to involve oneself in the plight for and interacting with Thailand’s diminishing elephant population – this fascinating animal that is such a strong symbol for Thailand. Some go trekking on the back of an elephant, some give donations – and some gets involved in the noble sport elephant polo to support them!
Two long-term Swedish members of the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce as well as residents of Thailand are heavily involved in this admirable and unique activity; Mr Björn Richardsson and Mr Christopher Stafford. These aficionados have also played an instrumental role in bringing this sport to Thailand from Nepal.
And some 14 years after the start of the “adventure” the elephant population can reap the rewards of their efforts: much fewer having to work on the streets of Bangkok, something that satisfies the two gentlemen immensely.
“There are much fewer elephants in Bangkok nowadays, which is really good and the whole idea with doing this,” says founder Christopher Stafford.
“In Bangkok there are only a few left,” states the Swede, “which is really good and the whole idea with doing this.”
The annual event allows 50 young elephants to be taken off the streets for the two-week period during the tournament, providing them with the best food possible, as well as the only proper veterinary check and vitamins they receive all year.
And only street elephants, or other domesticated elephants are used for the tournament, the majority of them brought in from Surin.

Christopher Stafford introduced the sport and tournament to Thailand in 2001 through Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas; the brand for which he was then working in Hua Hin. At the beginning the main owner had his doubts but today it has grown into one of Thailand’s most prominent events for tourism promotion and a very essential, core project for Anantara’s CSR efforts on the annual calendar. As the elephant is something of a national icon the event fits perfectly with tourism promotion.
Christopher had asked a friend if it was possible to play polo in Thailand and his good friend, restaurateur David Jacobsen from Bangkok, had then suggested to try out elephant polo instead. The Swede became instantly fascinated and set out to realise it in Thailand, feeling it just had to be done.
Thus, Kings Cup Elephant Polo was born and it has been quite a journey since then.
“In the first year, we had six teams and were not sure what we were doing, but we tried and it work. It was a bit ad hoc but it was great fun, we realized. Then in the second year we increased to ten teams, and in 2005 we peaked and had sixteen teams. And that maximum we’ve maintained since then,” says Christopher.
The importance of the event for the Swedes was always to help the elephants – which has not changed much.
“When Björn opened Anantara in the Golden Triangle we built in an elephant programme. And I managed get John Roberts over here to establish the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) which has been there for almost ten years and has grown immensely. So John is a central figure in this, who was part of elephant polo also before this and worked in Nepal with conservation.”
Set up to improve the plight of Thailand’s elephants GTAEF has been diversified to include welfare projects that incorporate broader philanthropic and cultural objectives.
Overseeing GTAEF, John is also Anantara’s Director of Elephants and Conservation Efforts at Anantara Golden Triangle’s on-site Elephant Camp.
Under Roberts’ passionate helm, over 40 elephants have been rescued from Thailand’s city streets, accompanied by their entire mahout family.
“Those were previously street elephants and now live the good life and their families are compensated for the income they would have otherwise gained from the elephants being on the streets. Now the elephants don’t have to suffer, and can stay healthy and enjoy support from a veterinarian.”
GTAEF is very much helped by the annual elephant polo tournament with its charity gala dinner.

And as the 2014 edition of the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament was held in Bangkok, at VR Sports Club, for the first time (after previous stints in Chiang Rai and most recently held in Hua Hin) the charity auction raised a generous sum of THB4.5 million for various elephant charity projects bringing the total sum raised to US$900,000 (BHT 28.7 million.)
The event is thus of big importance.
“It’s among the 3-4 foremost ways for the elephants to get money. You have this problem that there are 2600 jobless elephants. And they live on tourism; hiking etc., but they do not have that every day, sometimes they have no income for 3 - 4 months. And for their care elephant polo is probably one of the most positive supports ever for them. The mahouts fight hard to get to join each year.”
As for participants, they come from all over the world, and every year includes the core of players from the birthplace of the sport – Nepal. 
“In my view those men that have been doing this for 30 years are the real deal.”
“Without them elephant polo would not be what it has become today, because they have given it certain character. That is quite important, there’s a very nice social life between all of us who have been part of this from the beginning; it has grown into a society. I think we would not have managed to keep this going without that. It is not anything snobbish. It has grown into a very strong friendship between the players. So it’s been a joy.
Björn can only agree: “It’s the people, it’s an incredible mix of great persons!”
The World Elephant Polo Association is based there, where Bjorn, Christopher and some others, are representatives. Their work is ensuring that the tournaments are conducted in the safest way possible for elephants, players and mahouts.
Every year they go there to play and to attend an annual meeting.
Anyone interested in joining the game can come forward.
“Contact us; we take in new players. Some then stay for a number of years while others who don’t like it that much opt out.”
It seems to be all about the friendship between people and the love of elephants, which seems like a winning formula.
