Today, 18 May, Thailand and Sweden celebrate our 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation

Bilateral relations between Sweden and then Siam began in earnest in 1868 when the first Siam-Swedish friendship treaty, The Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation of 1868, was finalised. The treaty was signed 18 May 1868 in London by representatives for the two Kingdoms, Baron Carl Fredrik Lotharius Hochschild for Sweden and Sir John Bowring for Siam. At the time Hochschild served as Sweden´s envoyé to the UK. Sir John was since 1867 Siam´s ambassador to the courts of Europe.

Siam sent its first own ambassador to Europe 1882, who was also accredited to Sweden. Two years later Axel Johnson was appointed Siam Consul General in Stockholm. In 1885 Johnson arranged the first Swedish Industrial Exhibition in Siam.
